Simple Orzo

This simple side dish highlights orzo's appeal as a small, rice-shaped pasta that cooks incredibly fast. The recipe combines tender pasta with bright citrus and butter for a Mediterranean-inspired accompaniment. It pairs well with seafood, poultry, or vegetarian mains and can be customized with herbs, cheese, or vegetables for different variations.

  • 180g orzo
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 15g butter (or olive oil)
  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice (1/2 lemon)
  • Chopped fresh parsley or feta cheese crumbles, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Fill a medium pot with 2L water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, add the orzo and stir.

  2. Bring back to a boil, then boil for about 8 minutes until tender. Taste test a grain to check doneness. Drain into a strainer and return to the pot.

  3. Stir in kosher salt, butter (or olive oil), and lemon juice. Taste and adjust lemon if desired. Add optional garnish. Serve immediately; store leftovers refrigerated for up to 5 days.
